Medical Assistant career opportunities are growing!

Medical assisting is projected to be among the fastest-growing occupations through 2018 with an expected job growth of 34% according the U.S. Department of Labor.  This occupation can offer job security, personal satisfaction, and new experiences – it’s a career to feel good about!  The medical assistant diploma program prepares the student for employment in the health care field.  You will learn how to safely and efficiently perform specific clinical and administrative tasks in doctor’s offices, clinics, hospitals and other health care related locations.

Detroit Business Institute-Downriver has been training medical assistants for over 15 years.

Medical assistant students will receive hands-on training in:

-    vital signs
-    electrocardiograms (EKG)
-    first aid / CPR
-    phlebotomy
-    exam room procedures
-    collecting and processing specimens
-    minor surgery assisting
-    medical histories
-    medical office procedures
-    medical insurance billing
-    medical document processing
-    scheduling appointments

EXTERNSHIPS
Medical assistant students will complete a practical externship prior to graduation.  This externship is generally conducted at a physician’s office, health clinic, or other health-related facility.  The externship portion of the medical assisting program is a vital part of the learning process which will give students the opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills they learned in the classroom. The externship normally requires 4 – 6 weeks to complete.

CERTIFICATION
Upon completion of the medical assisting program, students are eligible to sit for the certification examination to become a Registered Medical Assistant (RMA).  Taking this exam is voluntary; however, it is recommended that all graduates of the medical assistant program take this exam.

Our strong comprehensive medical assisting curriculum has produced a 96% pass rate  of the RMA certification exams taken over the past five years.

DAY AND EVENING CLASSES
The medical assistant program is offered in both day school and evening school.  Day school students attend five days per week, and evening students attend four evenings per week, Monday through Thursday.

FINANCING OPTIONS
In addition to any grant and scholarship aid for which students are eligible, 84% of graduates in the year July 1, 2010 through June 30, 2011 used loans to finance their education.

84% of graduates used federal loans – the median federal loan debt for the graduates of this program was $2,014

Two of the graduates used institutional financing and none of the graduates used private educational loans.

PROGRAM LENGTH
This program is designed to take 10 months in day school and 13 months in evening school to complete.  Of the graduates in the year 7/1/10 through 6/30/11, 16% completed on the scheduled graduation date and 62% completed within one month of the scheduled graduation date.

PLACEMENT RATE
DBI-Downriver provides employment statistics to its accrediting body, the Accrediting Council of Independent Colleges and Schools on an annual basis.  The job placement rate for the year July 1, 2010 through June 30, 2011 was 73%.  This placement rate includes graduates who found employment by September 15, 2011 in their field of study or in a related field and does not include unrelated employment.
